Is it Just The Detox?

fatiguedladyI once met a friend for tea and between bites of her muffin (??) she explained to me that her eczema on her face was just a detox reaction. I bit my tongue but naturally was a little sceptical…

Another time I had picked up some kind of nasty bug while on vacation and a friend came over to see me and let me know that my body was just detoxing… Um thanks… no, diarrhea is not always detox.  Sometimes I get upset and I feel that comments like these give those of us who are interested in helping the body’s detoxification processes just look dumb :/

We do hear this when we are actually on a cleanse, no cupcakes, an actual cleanse. And it is definitely true. I’ve made “cleanse” mistakes and maybe you have too: Going way too hard core way too quickly with diet and lifestyle changes and getting hit with headaches or other icky feelings for a few days.  This is not a sign that you’re kicking ass.  It is a sign that you may be releasing stored substances at a faster rate than your liver can handle.  Or that there is a backup between phase one and two detoxification, an imbalance there.  When we experience these “detox” symptoms they are actually tox symptoms showing that harmful metabolites in our bodies are doing harm rather than being excreted safely.  Take care of yourself, support your detoxification and excretion pathways and go slow enough that your body can handle what you’re throwing at it.

With that being said, what I can calling tox and some call detox reactions still need to be differentiated from more serious problems.  Here are three easy ways to know if you are experiencing detox or if you are experiencing something more:

#3 way to know if your detox reaction is actually a detox reaction: You are moving in the direction of more and more clean/great/healing food and lifestyle choices. For example this could happen when starting a new fitness program, incorporating more greens, meditating, using infrared saunas, removing processed foods from the diet or anything that is going toward the clean and away from the processed food worlds.

This could also happen if you were at a plateau for a while and then something happened like christmas or someone’s birthday party and you ended up with foods in your system that you are no longer used to. In that case the body will be extra motivated to get rid of the offending foods and this is detox, this is our bodies working exactly as they should. Maybe my friend with the cupcakes WAS detoxing? You get the idea! 🙂

#2 way to know if your detox reaction is actually a detox reaction: You experience the negative “reaction” for a short time. Less than three days. If, for example, you make a dietary change too quickly and then feel nauseous for five days there may be more going on than detoxification. Maybe the liver needs more support and cannot handle the job of detox the way that it should. Maybe the digestive system is having trouble getting rid of something or maybe the new food that has been suggested to you is simply not working for you!  You can intervene in holistic ways that help to support the body to do what it’s trying to do, get rid of what is hurting it.

#1 way to know if you detox reaction is actually a detox reaction: You feel BETTER after it is over! Even better than before. So after a short time of feeling not-so-great you suddenly feel better than before. The birds are singing the sun is shining and you are loving life in a new way. You probably just experienced a short detox hoorah.

Since at the root cause level many chronic conditions are triggered by something in the body that shouldn’t be there in the first place detoxification is a good idea. I encourage you to lightly cleanse your body and move in the direction of clean food choices but never at the detriment to your long term well being or to the level that it hurts you from doing too much too fast.

Have you experienced the Herxheimer or detox reaction before? What triggered it? I look forward to hearing from you in the comments below.

Fun as an Antidote to Candida

Brace yourself!!

new2Have you watched Outlander?  Such a good show from a herbalists’ perspective.  Maggots and leaches were used in medicine in the past.  When each of us gets over how disgusting that is we can remember the role of the maggots was to eat diseased and deceased flesh, in effect taking out the garbage from wounds and other skin conditions.  Actually quite resourceful, observant and courageous.  Thank goodness we are not doing that anymore!  We’ve made some progress and have stopped putting creepy crawly things on our bodies, right?  Or have we?

Candida

Candida likes to feed on diseased or deceased flesh and tissues that are not oxygenated well.  Candida takes out the garbage.  Unfortunately the garbage collector has job security and tenure.  We can ask her to leave but there will always be a few Candida hanging about, waiting to fulfill their role in the holistic whole.

As long as we are on this planet we are in a relationship with Candida and other yeasty beasties.  Candida is essential for the proper functioning of our planet and the disposal and recycling of our own wastes.

Now.  Sometimes I like to pretend Candida is not a problem.  This is mostly because I am so tired of so many alternative practitioners telling folks they have Candida and they should go on a diet for a few months, sometimes without doing any real testing or trying to find the root cause.  Have you ever gone on a Candida diet?  Tell me was it the root of your problems?  Did the diet fix it?  My guess is your answers might be yes no no.

Candida overgrowths, if indeed that is what is going on, are cause of the problem but a solution of sorts.  There is no waste disposal without waste.

Candida is not the root of the problem but a bit of an invasive and opportunistic hitchhiker.  It is not the Candida but the GARBAGE that is the problem.  No garbage = no candida it’s as simple as that in theory.

Once these yeasts are established or overgrown we must do more than stop feeding them by going on a candida specific diet.

We can reduce the garbage by:  eating fresh whole foods that are high in minerals, drinking plenty of good water and experiencing exuberant no-holds-barred fun.  (You may be thinking… she’s completely lost it this time)

Fresh whole plants are high in fiber and will have a cleansing and detoxifying effect on the body.  If food is not sitting around waiting to be fermented but instead moving happily through we will have less garbage left behind to feed to the yeasts.  Fresh foods high in minerals will also be… high in minerals.  We need many minerals to move oxygen around the body, keeping our tissues healthy and alive.  One of the most important minerals is iron, for example.  With enough iron and B vitamins (folate, 6 and 12) our bodies are more able to make healthy red blood cells that can transport oxygen around our whole systems keeping us fresh and oxygenated.  Our bodies will be better able with adequate trace minerals, chromium, vanadium, magnesium and zinc, to maintain blood glucose homeostasis.

Trust me the candida are not going to like it when we maintain our own homeostasis without them.  But you will.  Just simply having healthy red blood cells can make you feel alive, energized and smarter.  Of course we need more than minerals for this, we need all the vitamins/minerals that we need.

Drinking plenty of fresh water.  That’s right!  When our bodies become dehydrated they pull water out of our blood to preserve the more sensitive tissues.  Less water in the blood means just a little less circulation and oxygenation.  Of course dehydration CAN be very serious.  I was reading a study this morning that claimed to have found that 80% of North Americans were chronically dehydrated.  And I believe it.  Did you know that you can tell the difference between chronic and acute dehydration by looking at certain blood markers from a functional diagnostic perspective?

What are your vulnerable places?  Can you have some spring water stashed at your desk?  In the car?  Replacing some of the water with fresh green or other juice would be even better, depending on what you can handle for blood sugars.  Then you are getting the water, the minerals, increased energy and a delicious juice.

Soon onto the fun.  First the un-fun.  Many studies have shown the effect of stress hormones on the body over prolonged periods of time.  Producing cortisol, the chronic stress hormone, steals precursors away from the sex hormones and the growth and repair hormones in something called the pregnenalone steal.  Increased cortisol over time can also contribute to insulin resistance, thyroid hormone resistance and arterial damage not to mention the cascading effect of loss of sleep and systemic inflammation (that’s a biggie).  Some studies have shown that chronic stress can affect the heart’s electrical rhythm.  Stress can definitely affect the behaviour of the digestive system and can create an environment friendly to hostile bacteria, yeasts and parasites to boot!

What is the opposite of anxiety?  Relaxation and fun.  If stress can lead to various conditions that affect circulation negatively then de-stressing may be helpful!  Being in a lively state of being, a state of life-liness helps keep Candida and other yeasts at bay.  They are waiting to decompose us.  Not yet, Candida, hold on.

One more thing about fun.  When we are laughing or when we are in a state of love our bodies actually produce more immune cells!  Our bodies have increased immunity when we are wearing that rosy glow.  This is good news for us.  We are going to need our immune systems to fight off the candida especially since we are not feeding them any more.

I would love to hear from you.  Please share your experiences, positive and negative about the Candida diet in the comments below 🙂

3 Everyday Microbe-Moduling Herbs

article_imageAre you interested in keeping your detox delicious? Would you like to bring digestive bacteria into balance while enjoying delicious food too? Many of our common culinary herbs that we love are also powerful antibacterial herbs with many other benefits. These herbs give our foods their distinctive character and flavour. Many of them are carminative too, helping to relax the smooth muscles surrounding the digestive system.  In this article I share three of my favourite antibacterial kitchen herbs that can be used safely every day.

1. Ginger
Ginger has been used for thousands of years for its antimicrobial properties (I like to call it microbe modulating) and has been carried around in my purse from time to time for three years. Some people carry Advil and I carry plants… Plants smell better.

Ginger has several properties to be considered when choosing this herb. Ginger has also been used for its anti-inflammatory, warming, circulatory stimulating and expectorant properties. People use ginger to help stimulate faster immunity to a cold or flu and for arthritis, headaches and circulation issues particularly at the extremities. Ginger can be great for pain because it does quite well with reducing immune imbalances at the root cause.

I often take ginger as a tea or a fresh juice and really enjoy its warming and stimulating properties along with its microbe modulating benefits. The character of the fresh juice is very very different from the character of the boiled root in a tea or a straight ginger/garlic “soup”. The cooked ginger tea can actually feel way spicier and more concentrated.

Some of my family love those ginger candies but I’m not convinced they are really doing anything helpful and I haven’t been able to create an amazing sugar-free alternative!  Yet.  Some people take ginger before bed to stimulate small intestinal motility in the digestive tract which can be very helpful to keep food moving so that it does not feed the bad bacteria in an unhealthy way.  This is a job for 1000-2000 mg (a couple grams) of ginger powder or extract.  If this sounds like the right herb for you give ginger a try!

2. Rosemary
Rosemary, the herb of remembrance. I love to drink just straight rosemary tea or mix it with my peppermint. Rosemary increases the flow of oxygen to areas all over the body including the mind. This may be why it seems to bring increased mental clarity. I know I love to drink rosemary tea when I am doing some thinking, writing or planning articles. Rosemary has been used for circulatory issues just like our other two herbs ginger and cinnamon. Rosemary is warming as well. Rosemary has been used for cramping and bloating in the digestive system. I have included rosemary here because it has antibacterial and anti fungal properties and has been used for candida, both the oil and the herb itself. There is some evidence that rosemary does not kill the friendly flora in the body but only some of the pathogenic bacteria and yeasts. A word of warning is that although some rosemary essential oils are edible they are strong medicine so make sure to start slowly and take care of yourself. Try mixing the fresh herb with others in salad dressings or marinating mushrooms with it. I love rosemary with lime and berries in desserts.

3. Cinnamon
Another stimulating, warming and drying herb, cinnamon has so many virtues I’m not sure where to get started. It does have those microbial modulating qualities we’re looking for here and of course tastes really good in a chai tea.

Cinnamon has blood sugar lowering properties and has been used digestively for its astringent qualities too. Astringents can actually help tissues to tighten in the digestive system. Cinnamon is one of the arch enemies of the evil candida, the scourge of the digestive tract 🙂 It is slightly demulcent so can create a bit of a healing soothing gel as it travels through the body and this is often overlooked because of its many other amazing properties. Cinnamon has been used as a blood thinner so if you are already on blood thinners be careful adding this.

Cinnamon can be taken as a tea or a tincture and of course in my favourite foods. I do love the spicy… Cinnamon has also been used to increase circulation. This applies to our extremities but also to increase circulation to the digestive system too.  This means better coordinated digestive muscles, more digestive hormones and enzymes and better movement of the immune system.  Cinnamon is sometimes used as an anti-diarrhea herb although I have no personal experience with it in this way.  Cinnamon is often included in toothpaste, rinses and other tooth products because of its antibacterial and astringent properties.

Cinnamon is high in nutrients and antioxidants just in case you needed another reason to love and include it regularly.  I find cinnamon also a sneaky way to cover up the flavours of other herbs if I am trying to sneak adaptogens or mushrooms into anything because of its strong yet familiar flavour. Many of the studies featuring cinnamon for the uses above have been using more concentrated encapsulated doses but it is my personal belief that using cinnamon as a culinary spice has many many great benefits including the ones we have talked about and more. As with any herb there is a pre-digestive effect, the effect on our microbiomes, the effect of the herb itself on our biochemistry and the effects of how it alters our digestive bacteria and environment on our other systems too.

The power of these simple herbs above cannot be overstated… And I bet you have them in your kitchen right now. Enjoy your cup of chai or rosemary marinated vegetables knowing you are bringing balance to your digestion and enjoying the myriad health benefits these herbs possess.

Our Own Personal Shield

clip_image002Are you ready for some myth busting?  Have you heard of the acid mantle on the face?  Did you know the skin of the face has a pH of between 4.5 and 5.5 in healthy adults that do not use facial products?  pH refers to the acidity or alkalinity of something.  On the Ph scale 7 is neutral and each decimal point going down or up from there is ten times more acidic or alkaline respectively.  Many products advertise that they are pH balanced which actually doesn’t mean too much unless they say what they are pH balanced for.  The thing is our skin itself isn’t 4.5 or 5.5.  It is the coating on the skin that has this pH.  It is maintained by our sebum and our friendly happy bacteria.

I have been thinking about this.  And thinking some more.  It started with an idea that could help us replenish the good bacteria on the outside of our bodies (more on this later)… which got me thinking…  (uh-oh!)  There are some other areas that are outside of our bodies that we don’t really think about very much in which the bacteria and yeasts can get a bit unbalanced.  In fact EVERY kind of skin that I could think of seems to have its own specialized “mantle” too.  Here are three important inside-out areas of our skin that we don’t think of that often but that also have a bacterial coating which maintains a certain pH.

The sinuses – It may be a bit of a stretch to think of the sinuses as outside the body but when you think about it they are made up of another kind of specialized skin which although we can’t touch is pretty much outside the body.  They are hollow!  It is normal to have a thin layer of bacteria that create a healthy environment in there but sometimes when there is an imbalance we can have difficulty.  We can access our sinuses through Neti pots and deep inhalation.  Have you struggled with sinus infections in the past?  I know I have.  I propose we stop thinking about just “killing” the problem bacteria in there but start focusing on bringing balance to the complex ecosystem including bacteria and friendly yeasts in the sinuses because if the beneficial bacteria aren’t home someone else will probably move in.

The lungs – When you think about it even though the lungs are complicated and they are a gateway between the inside and outside of the body they still are not quite inside the body.  They have their own specialized skin and special group of bacterial flora that keep them healthy and balanced.  They can unfortunately also be a place where unfriendly flora can set up camp.  The lungs are tricky but we do have deep breathing and inhalation to get to them.  Aromatherapy comes to mind and I know it sounds hokey but so does oxygen!  I am going to focus on bringing in deep breaths as a way to keep that environment balanced.  All that extra energy from deep breathing?  Bonus!  Of course there are herbs that can help to clear the lungs but that is a topic for another article.

The digestive tract – This is really a long tube which connects many different areas of specialized skin.  Each of these areas is meant for doing different things and for those different functions different pH environments must be maintained.  For now let’s just focus on the small intestine.  You may have heard about the small intestine being an alkaline environment approaching 8.  I agree with this in principle.  I think a better description would be that it is just a hollow tube.  I’m not sure what the pH of a hollow tube is…  it is the bile that our lovely organs secrete that is actually alkaline.  I always wondered what those lactobacillus were doing in there if it was so alkaline.  Now I know.

Our small intestinal bacteria are creating an acid mantle or acid barrier on the skin of the small intestine.  This enables this special skin to absorb nutrients.  The acidic covering actually makes the minerals absorbable for the skin in our small intestines.  This means we really need those bacteria in there so that we can absorb nutrients.  If you think about it alkaline minerals in an alkaline environment can’t really be broken down any further (they’ve already been through the stomach acid though).  The bacteria help us here.  This can go wrong when for a physical or other reason the bacteria are able to grow out of control and then we no longer have an “alkaline” hollow tube.  The small intestine is harder for us to access.  We can’t really get to it even though it is still not really IN the body.  The only way that we can get to it is indirectly through the foods we eat, the water we drink, herbs, probiotic foods and spices.

Bifidum Advantages

tummySome straight Bifidobacterium probiotics can be a little on the pricey side.  Some are close to 200 dollars.  In Canadian that’s like a 9000…  well close to 400 anyway.  I believe this is worth it.  Some of the benefits of Bifidobacteria are surprising but they are worth us taking note when we are customizing our own probiotic foods (sauerkraut or yogurt) where we have the option of adding more bifidobacterium to create the balance that we want and need.  They are a bigger investment than the lactobacillus as they are harder to produce.  I hope this article can help you find some reasons to carry on keeping your home-made or customized products fancy.

Bifidobacterium lactis have been shown to activate T killer cells and increase immunity.  This of course will help to balance the digestive bacteria and improve innate immunity all over.  Bifidobacterium Lactis have also been shown to directly reduce candida in the large intestine.

Bifidobacteria Bifidum has been shown to cause cell death in colorectal cancer.  Like B. lactis this strain has been shown to also wake up the lymphocytes and T killer cells.

Bifidobacterium Longum has been shown to increase immunity and also to lower cholesterol and directly inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and fungi in the digestive tract.

Bifidobacteria Infantis have been shown to decrease inflammation in the digestive tract which can reduce symptoms of IBS among other digestive symptoms.  As you know any inflammation in the body can contribute to symptoms all over the place and with the majority of our immune systems residing in the gut we have a great deal of control over the bulk of our immune and inflammatory burdens.

Bifidobacterium animalis can help with absorption of Magnesium, Calcium and Iron.  They have also been shown to reduce pain, bloating and even diarrhea associated with IBS.

Bifidobacteria across the board have been shown to reduce constipation, produce B9/folate, reduce Candida and be among the safest bacteria to use during times of small intestinal imbalances or overgrowths.

So if the Bifidum powder you are considering purchasing is a little dear remember that you can extend it through culturing it in your own non-dairy yogurts and cheeses, even using the probiotic powder to create a starter culture that you can propagate at home.  You can learn how to extend the powder by using a starter that can be used batch after batch in the Friendly Flora Collective HERE (we will also nerd out more deeply on Bifido).

Let me know how your creations are coming along in the comments below 🙂
